Katrina Kaif wowed audiences in 2007 with back-to-back hits like Namastey London, Apne, Partner and Welcome. But isn't it odd that the 23-year-old was paired in all these films with graying brigade actors like Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Bobby Deol? Akshay and Salman are stars whose presence in the cast can guarantee a box office hit so being paired with them has its advantages, even if they are at least 15 years older than her. It is not surprising that the trend is evident even in Katrina's forthcoming films- Race opposite Saif Ali Khan , Singh is Kinng opposite Akshay Kumar and Yuvraj opposite Salman Khan.We bet a lot of Bollywood buffs tend to bracket Katrina Kaif with older actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor rather than PYTs like Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.
Success for Katrina may have come at a cost but that is set to change - because now there is Ranbir Kapoor!
The potential inherent in their pairing is not lost on Bollywood filmmakers. Director Siddharth Anand was the first to see it when he signed up Katrina for a role opposite Ranbir in his untitled next, being produced by Yash Raj Films.
However, his films had three other leading ladies - Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba and a length overrun forced him to delete the Katrina track.
Those who saw the dropped footage of the track were impressed by the chemistry evident between Katrina and Ranbir and buzz about it reached director Raj Kumar Santoshi who, after seeing the footage, immediately signed up the pair for his next film.
The big budget film is being financed by Tips whose head honcho Ramesh Taurani confirmed to Mumbai Mirror, "Yes, we have signed on Katrina and Ranbir for a love story to be directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi."
As unabashed fans of the stylish and upcoming young star we are delighted. Look out Deepika, we bet you never saw it coming!
